About Pashan

Pashan means “rock” or “stone” in Sanskrit and Marathi. It was a village on the western edge of Pune. Much of its land was developed by the D R Kulhalli Company.

After independence, many research and defence bodies set up campuses here. These include the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), IISER Pune, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, ARDE, HEMRL, the National Institute of Virology and C-DAC. Their large green campuses give Pashan its open, leafy feel.

Housing grew from the 2000s as Baner and Hinjewadi boomed. Pashan stayed calmer than its neighbours, with less nightlife and more trees.

Pashan Lake and Pashan Hill

Pashan Lake is a man-made lake built in the British era by damming the Ramnadi river. It once supplied drinking water to Pashan and Sutarwadi. That use stopped in 1998 because of silt and pollution.

Today the lake is a popular spot for walks and bird watching, especially for migratory birds in winter. PMC has built a short nature trail and a bamboo plantation. The lake view point draws many visitors.

Pashan Hill (Pashan Tekdi) is part of the Baner–Pashan hill range and its biodiversity park. Morning walkers and joggers use it daily.
