About Deccan Gymkhana

The area takes its name from the Deccan Gymkhana sports club, started in October 1906. The club grew from Lokmanya Tilak’s vision for Indian sport. It still offers cricket, tennis, swimming, badminton and more.

The neighbourhood grew around education. Fergusson College was founded in 1885 by the Deccan Education Society. Over the next century, bungalows and housing societies filled the lanes between FC Road and Karve Road.

Today Deccan mixes old bungalows with new boutique apartments. Its streets are lively with students, cafes and shops. Yet the inner lanes of Prabhat Road and Bhandarkar Road stay calm and green.
